Once you arrive at Incheon Airport, there are several ways to get to Seoul. The three most common options are the subway, airport bus, and taxi.
In this guide, I will explain which option may be the most convenient depending on where you are staying and how you are traveling.
I personally use the subway most of the time when traveling from Incheon Airport because the area where I live is relatively close to the airport. However, when I need to travel farther into Seoul, I often use an airport bus instead.
If you are visiting Korea, the best transportation option can depend on how much luggage you have, how many people you are traveling with, and where your accommodation is located.
Based on the way I usually travel from the airport, I will explain how I choose between the different options.
Step 1. Check Where Your Accommodation Is Located
Before choosing your transportation, the first thing you should check is where your accommodation is located.
Your destination can make a big difference when deciding which transportation option is the most convenient.
For example, if your accommodation is relatively close to Incheon Airport, using an airport bus or taxi may not be very efficient. In this case, taking the subway can often be much easier.
If we roughly divide Seoul into east, west, south, and north, I generally recommend using the subway if your accommodation is located in the western part of Seoul.
If you are staying farther east, south, or north, an airport bus may be more convenient than taking the subway all the way.
One reason is that the subway is one of the most commonly used forms of transportation in Seoul. The farther you travel into the city, the more crowded the trains can become, which can make carrying and storing large luggage uncomfortable.
On the other hand, the subway can save time and help you move around quickly.
So if your destination is not too far from the airport, I would personally consider the subway first.

Step 2. Taking the Subway from Incheon Airport
First, I will explain how to take the subway from Incheon Airport.
At both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, follow the signs for the Airport Railroad when you want to reach the train station.
The Airport Railroad station is located underground, so continue following the signs until you reach the platform area.
Before entering the station, you will need a transportation card or another payment method that can be used for public transportation.

Once you reach the Airport Railroad station, you will generally need to choose between two types of trains: a faster train with fewer stops and a regular all-stop train.
The faster train does not stop at every station, while the regular train stops at all stations along the route.
Because of this, it is important to check where you need to go before choosing which train to take.
Do not simply choose the faster train because it looks more convenient. Depending on your destination, the regular train may actually take you closer to your accommodation without requiring an unnecessary transfer.
If you are traveling from the airport to another part of Seoul or the surrounding area, make sure you are following signs for the Airport Railroad rather than other airport transportation systems.
Local Tips
- I do not usually recommend taking a taxi as the first option. Incheon Airport has several good public transportation options that operate until fairly late, so a taxi is not always necessary.
- Airport Railroad trains have areas where you can place larger luggage, but regular subway trains usually do not have dedicated suitcase storage. Once you transfer to a normal subway line, you will generally need to keep your luggage with you.
- Subway stations have elevators, so you do not need to carry heavy luggage up stairs or use an escalator if it is uncomfortable.
- Airport buses have stop buttons, and the driver will usually help remove luggage stored underneath the bus when you arrive at your stop.
- An airport bus may take a little longer than the subway, but it can take you closer to areas that are inconvenient to reach by subway. This can make it much easier when you have large luggage.
- If possible, avoid weekday rush hours. Weekends can also be busy. The fastest train is not always the most comfortable option, and depending on the time of day, a regular train may give you a little more space for your luggage.
